Why I’m Switching from Canon R5 to Nikon Z8 After 15 Years with Canon

For the past 15 years, I’ve been a dedicated Canon shooter, capturing everything from wildlife to landscapes with Canon’s reliable cameras and lenses. My journey with Canon has been filled with memorable moments and incredible images, but as technology and industry dynamics evolve, so must our choices as photographers. After careful consideration, I’ve decided to switch from the Canon R5 to the Nikon Z8. Here’s why.

Canon R5: A Phenomenal Camera

Let me start by saying that the Canon R5 is a phenomenal camera. The image quality, autofocus system, and overall performance are exceptional, and I’ve loved every moment spent shooting with it. The R5 has been my trusted companion on countless shoots, delivering stunning results time and time again. It’s a camera that truly embodies Canon’s legacy of excellence, and it’s been an absolute joy to work with.

However, despite my love for the R5, there are other factors that have led me to consider a change.

Canon’s Closed Ecosystem and Forced Upgrades

One of the primary reasons behind my switch is Canon’s increasingly closed ecosystem, particularly when it comes to third-party lenses. Canon has made the decision to restrict third-party manufacturers from producing RF lenses, which significantly limits options for photographers. In a world where creative freedom and flexibility are paramount, this move feels like a step backward.

Furthermore, Canon’s approach to firmware updates has been less than encouraging. Rather than providing meaningful updates to existing models, Canon seems to be more focused on pushing users towards upgrading to newer models, such as the Canon R5 Mark II. While I understand the need for innovation and new product releases, I believe that loyal customers deserve better support for the gear they’ve already invested in.

Nikon’s Commitment to Photographers

In contrast, Nikon has shown a strong commitment to supporting photographers through continuous and meaningful firmware updates. The Nikon Z8, for instance, received a significant boost with the 2.0 firmware update, adding new features and enhancing the camera’s performance. Nikon’s approach makes it clear that they value their customers’ investments and are dedicated to improving their existing products rather than just pushing new models.

This philosophy aligns much more closely with my own values as a photographer. I appreciate a company that listens to its users and provides them with the tools they need to succeed, without making them feel like they need to constantly upgrade to the latest and greatest model.

The Decision to Switch

Switching camera systems after 15 years is no small decision, but the Nikon Z8 offers me the flexibility, innovation, and support that I need to continue growing as a photographer. Nikon’s open approach to third-party lenses and their dedication to improving their cameras through firmware updates make it an attractive choice for anyone serious about their craft.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Canon, and I have nothing but respect for the brand and the gear that has served me so well over the years. However, as the landscape of photography evolves, it’s important to choose the tools that best align with my needs and values. For me, that tool is now the Nikon Z8.

Looking Forward

As I transition to the Nikon Z8, I’m excited about the new possibilities and creative opportunities that lie ahead. I’m looking forward to exploring Nikon’s ecosystem, pushing the boundaries of my photography, and sharing the results with all of you.

Change is never easy, especially after 15 years with one brand, but I’m confident that this switch will allow me to continue doing what I love with even greater freedom and flexibility. Thank you, Canon, for all the memories, and here’s to the next chapter with Nikon.
